KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) will soon introduce a WhatsApp number to make it easier for the public to forward suggestions to the council.

MPP chairman Lo Khere Chiang said the number would also enable the public to give constructive feedback and advice on how the council can move forward and improve its services to the community.

“The council is taking various steps to improve the services because we want to be accountable to the local community, provide opportunities for the residents to be involved, and promote good local governance through open leadership and sensitivity to the needs, interests and aspirations of the community.

“The council shall work towards achieving its vision of improving the quality of life of the residents,” said Lo said at MPP’s 21st anniversary celebration yesterday.

He said the MPP crest is also being placed on road signage to help the public identify those under the council’s jurisdiction, so that complaints can be lodged directly to the authorities concerned.

Lo added MPP has sent eight enforcement officers for a traffic wardens course run by the Padawan District police station, to assist the police with managing traffic in MPP’s area.

He also urged rate payers to pay their assessment bills, pointing out the money is used to provide services such as road maintenance, grass cutting, drain clearing, and refuse collection.

“Assessment rates are the major source of income of the council, which contribute between 60 and 70 per cent of the total revenue, and we’re very much dependent on the revenue derived from the assessment rates,” he said.

Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian officiated at the function.
