KUCHING: Eight enforcement officers of Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) have undergone a two-day training by the traffic police.

MPP chairman Lo Khere Chiang said they were given the training as traffic wardens on May 11 to 12 and are now waiting to be given the authority from the Ministry of Transport.

Even though the enforcement officers have gone through the training, they have to be authorised by the ministry to conduct traffic enforcement, he explained when contacted yesterday.

According to Lo, congested areas in MPP include 7th Mile bazaar, 10th Mile traffic light intersection and MJC Batu Kawa.

It is understood that the trained enforcement officers will be expected to direct traffic during peak hours.

In April, Lo, who is also Batu Kitang assemblyman, said traffic wardens would be of great help when automated systems could not cope with heavy traffic.

“They will be able to use common sense to ease traffic congestions,” he said.

He added that the trained enforcement officers would serve as traffic wardens as and when necessary because they also had other enforcement duties.

He made it clear that the enforcement officers, who were trained as traffic wardens, would fill in for traffic police and not take over the latter’s duties.
